EVERY LITTLE BIT COUNTSEar to Toes Dining
26 FEB 2013: When you read the menus you could easily think you’re in a foreign country. Items like gingered pork intestine, chicken feet with winter melon, cooked blood cubes, beef stomach, fried fish skin and black fungus aren’t the usual in Canadian restaurants. That is unless you are in Richmond.
PARADES OF FOODHard to say no in Rio
21 MAY 2013: In many parts of the world, people think a rodizio refers to a Brazilian style steakhouse. Not in Brazil. In that country a rodizio is a style of eatery. Perhaps more accurately an excess style of eating.
MAN WITH A MISSIONYou have to stand for something
12 SEP 2011: What kind of man would spend nine years, make countless phone calls and several trans-Atlantic trips to bring a sculpture exhibit...to his winery? The same guy who would beat out developers for 600 acres of paradise with two and a half kilometres of gorgeous waterfront and plant vineyards not houses there.
AFTER THE FIRESimply the best
16 AUG 2011: I just enjoyed one of the best meals I’ve had in years in Canada at a resort that faced disaster in the winter of this year. I’d heard about the fire that destroyed the kitchen and forced a major renovation of the dining room and bar in February 2011 so I didn’t know what to expect. Talk about turning lemons into lemonade.
REVIVAL OF A WEST COAST ICONThe making of a legend
03 AUG 2011: There’s a lot at stake when you reopen an historic hotel in the centre of a major city after years of renovations. Will former patrons find you’ve captured the spirit of the place while sweeping away the cobwebs of its past slow decay? Will new customers appreciate you kept the old elevators despite a tricky retrofit that may occasionally malfunction? And will critics approve of your modern chic dining concept?
A TASTE OF TREMBLANTCooking with passion
18 JUL 2011: Quebec’s Mont Tremblant Resort in summer is a bee-hive of activities. Families with kids in tow are paddling about Lac Tremblant, descending the trails of the alpine luge, taking the free gondola to the casino and hiking and biking about the area. The heroes of this resort town however are working twelve hour days, seven days a week behind the stoves, often in basements. These chefs revealed their secrets to me as I dined about.
EAT DRINK AND BE MERRYOktoberfest in Munich
20 JUN 2011: It could only happen in Munich. A small beer garden sailed past me on wheels, peddled by revellers fuelled by beer. The guide/driver was sober (I assume) but the rest of the dozen on the Beer Bike were a merry lot, their hands wrapped around golden hued pints as their legs pumped. They were on a two hour tour of the city in unique Bavarian style.
WORLD CLASS NIBBLINGSnacking my way through Berlin
06 JUN 2011: Eat-the-world.com was an apt description for the food tour I took in the Kreuzberg area of Berlin. It’s also the name of the company founded in 2008 by Elke Freimuth with the goal of giving customers a tasty, non-touristy insight into the neighbourhoods of key German cities. My tour started at the Turkish restaurant Osmanli Saray Mutfagi.
HOW TO PICK A PUBPub Crawls in Ireland
24 MAY 2011: How to pick a pub in Dublin when there are 800 choices? Or in Belfast where dozens are historical landmarks offering such temptations as great live music and delicious food? There’s an answer to this thanks to a few entrepreneurial locals.
EAT AND LEARNCooking in Northern Ireland
09 MAR 2011: If Northern Ireland is not on your list of culinary destinations, it should be. I’ve just returned from a week of travels there where every meal was a delight of fresh local produce expertly cooked. Yes there were often five or more versions of beloved potatoes on the menus but those were sides to the exciting main dishes.
