The quintessential “airline guy,” as executive VP of Virgin Atlantic, David Tait set up, and then ran, the company’s hugely successful US operation for many years. He also has had stints at Wardair, Laker, Air Florida (pre-Virgin) and Air Canada (post). BORDERING ON THE RIDICULOUSThe drive to lower fares
16 MAY 2013: Being situated within an easy drive of Montreal, Vancouver and Winnipeg respectively means the sight of Quebec, BC and Manitoba license plates has always been a fact of life for residents of border towns like Plattsburgh NY, Bellingham WA and Grand Forks ND.
DAVID TAITWill be backFOOD FOR THOUGHTLet them eat Oreos
02 MAY 2013: The rapid disappearance of food as an inclusion on so many airlines around the world must have come as a real blow to comedy scriptwriters who were perhaps the only ones who feasted on airline food.
PENGUINS CAN’T FLYOh yeah
25 APR 2013: There has been a lot of heated debate over the years on the issue of whether or not pets belong in the passenger cabin of airplanes. I for one, as a lifetime ‘non-pet person’, am dead against it. I agree that the presence of Tiddles the cat under a seat in his box may not be a problem ninety percent of the time, but it’s the other 10 percent that simply isn’t worth the hassle.
GREAT EXPECTATIONSWi-finance is a problem
18 APR 2013: I have never understood why anyone using an ATM at a bank other than their own should feel they are entitled to a no charge transaction.
REAL AILClosing time has a sad new meaning
11 APR 2013: If current trends continue it won't be too many years before Visit Britain may be running copy that says, "and while you're there be sure to enjoy our famous pub" - singular! It’s one thing reading about the rapid disappearing act of the iconic British pub, but it is quite another experiencing the phenomenon first hand.
CYPRUS AVENUESAn island divided - Part Two
04 APR 2013: So, to continue my Cypriot tale from last week, I spent the winter of 1973-74 loving every moment of my job in the beautiful but troubled island of Cyprus.
CYPRUS AVENUESAn island divided. Part 1
28 MAR 2013: It already reads like the screenplay for the next James Bond movie - let’s call it “Shortfall.” The setting is an idyllic, tourism-rich Mediterranean island long partitioned by ethnic tensions that could boil over again at any time. The plot involves the island’s Swiss-like offshore ‘family’ banking repository that has become home to untold billions in Russian-owned euros. The shaky peace is suddenly jeopardized when a bizarre government banking initiative threatens to destabilize the whole euro zone if not the entire world’s fragile economic recovery.
DAVID TAITWill be backVISASDon’t leave home without one
14 MAR 2013: I remember being surprised a few years ago to discover that I needed a visa to travel to Brazil on a US passport and that it would cost $160 to get one. I had to make the trip though and so with only a couple of weeks until my planned departure date I headed off to the passport office at the Brazilian Embassy in New York City.
