Pam Stellini is an original. Her quirky outlook and wry humour defy categorization. Readers have compared her to Erma Bombeck and Art Buchwald with a travel spin – and we’re not about to argue. PACK ARTTravelling lighter than before
26 APR 2011: Some people check out of hotel rooms with their luggage slightly heavier than it was on arrival with toiletry supplies being mistaken for souvenirs and in one famous case in the US a U-Haul being used to clean out the entire contents of a Holiday Inn room. When comedian Bert Kreisher checks out of a hotel room he purposely leaves things behind, using contents from his luggage in twisted displays of art.
OTTAWAThe seriousness of voting
12 APR 2011: I was in Ottawa for the Travel and Vacation Show on week two of the federal election campaign, and already weary of the political rhetoric. I had taken the Vote Compass test on CBC expecting to learn that I had the mindset of the Green Party, but I was tagged Liberal.
LOOK UP IN THE AIRHear the pitter patter of happy feet
29 MAR 2011: When I read in the news last week that a penguin flew from San Francisco to San Diego I was captivated by the thought of an Antarctic bird flapping its flippers to achieve flight. Alas, the penguin was aboard Southwest Airlines on a flight with other business commuters in suits. I believe the penguin was the only one in a tuxedo.
In Orlandowith Pam Stellini
21 MAR 2011: My recent visit to Orlando was intended to learn a little more about what the area had to offer Canadians and when our WestJet flight landed early on a Tuesday morning, it was the beginning of five days of unexpected pleasures in a city known more for its thematic treasures.
LEAVE IT TO BIEBERFans swarm hotel
15 MAR 2011: These are the facts: A seventeen year old boy was trapped inside his hotel room in Liverpool England this weekend. Police warned that he would be arrested if he left the hotel due to the potential for riots.
EVERYWHERE BUT THE MENULike a duck to water
09 MARCH 2011: He gets paid to get all his ducks in a row – literally. The Duck Master gets all his ducks in a row as he guides them from their penthouse castle to the hotel lobby at the Peabody Hotel in Orlando. Twice a day they enjoy a frolic in the fountain (the ducks; that is) to the enjoyment of the guests at the hotel.
AIR TRANSATS VACATIONERKate McKenna
07 MARCH 2011: When Oakville’s Kate McKenna became Air Transat’s Vacationer the tour operator acquired a capable social networker with exemplary communication skills and propensity for travelling. Kate earned the coveted role out of 2,500 applicants, and if her obvious charms, sensibility and professionalism are what landed her this role of a lifetime, it will surely be Kate’s other qualities that will bring accomplishment to Air Transat. Kate is a good citizen.
ROOM SERVICE FOR MADONNAHeavy lifting required
01 MAR 2011: Whenever I check into a hotel I bring my own supply of tea bags; just in case I run into some hot water. Other than that, I pack quite lean knowing that the rare forgotten items can be replenished by the hotel, albeit in smaller, more plastic renditions. Not so with Madonna, she is more of a BYOB kind of gal.
FUN FOR A GOOD CAUSESkal Toronto gives generously
28 FEB 2010: Last week’s Skål Toronto fundraiser turned into a night of singing, jesting and camaraderie as the club surpassed their goal in raising funds for their colleagues at Skål Australia. The atmosphere was playful but the goal was most serious: to raise $10,000 that evening.
HELPING CANADIANSDiscover America
17 FEB 2011: Discover America Canada held their annual general meeting on Tuesday at the gracious Le Germain Maple Leaf Square in Toronto. San Francisco Travel was the sponsor of the meeting in anticipation of hosting PowWow May 21 to May 25.
