Pam Stellini is an original. Her quirky outlook and wry humour defy categorization. Readers have compared her to Erma Bombeck and Art Buchwald with a travel spin – and we’re not about to argue. SAN ANTONIOA river runs through it
15 DEC 2011: Unlike many cities, San Antonio is a place where man and nature convene in harmony. The city’s natural waterway and popular River Walk provide a charming backdrop for entertainment, dining and lodging, while offering such curiosities a box elder and a fig tree growing uninhibitedly out of a building along the embankment making a picturesque destination for locals and tourists alike.
DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXASThe sons of pioneers
06 DEC 2011: I may have failed in my attempt to pull off a cowgirl look on Saturday night at the honky-tonk. I had the scarf and the boots and the boot cut jeans. A fellow in Texas chuckled when I asked him how to tie up my square cotton scarf. “That there’s a bandana ma’am” he explained and even before my trip, a cowboy in Oakville previously pointed out that real cowboy boots don’t have zippers.
STUDENTS IN TRAVELIndustry leaders of the future
01 DEC 2011: There were a lot of students who showed up, but that’s only half the story. The 250 students taking part in the CITC Students-in-Travel Conference that took place at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre recently were keen and engaged.
THE PRICE WAS RIGHTBut the seat sale was too expensive
22 NOV 2011: My daughter wanted to come home from Halifax for a long weekend. She called and asked me to find a seat sale. I went on-line immediately and found one with Air Canada. She was in between classes but I wouldn’t let her off the phone. I have done this enough to know that the next time I checked the flights the prices would have gone up. I wasn’t born yesterday; possibly the day before though.
OPTIMISM AND OPPORTUNITYAlways a reason to go back to Israel
22 NOV 2011: Profit or Passion? Jerry Adler, manager marketing and PR, Israel Government Office of Tourism, said that there are an increasing number of companies that are selling Israel and no matter what the incentive is, the country is all the better for it. He was addressing a number of travel agents and media people at a breakfast meeting at the Windsor Arms Hotel last week.
DO NOT DISTURB HEISTCleaning out the hotel
08 NOV 2011: A man with a gun demanded cash from a clerk in a Comfort Inn in LA last week. There is video showing him walking through the lobby and going directly to the office behind the front desk. He should have spent more time in the lobby; at least to check the welcome board where he might have seen that there was a martial arts convention in town.
AIR SPACEAd Space
25 OCT 2011: “Ladies and gentlemen, we are waiting for take-off clearance from the Air Traffic Control tower. Thank you for your patience, and remember; Life’s a journey. Enjoy the ride. Now offering 2012 models; for 0% financing for 84 months.” Could this be the airline industry’s future take on a skyscraper ad?
THE TERMINALJaeger Mah makes himself at home at YVR
11 OCT 2011: How would you pack for an 80 day trip? How about an 80 day trip to the airport? Jaeger Mah is the winner of a contest to spend over two months living at the Vancouver Airport and so far he has needed a wet suit and Hawaiian lei. The former was to clean out a fish tank and the latter to perform a wedding ceremony.
HALIFAXMy city for guilty pleasures
27 SEP 2011: I was feeling a bit guilty about my trip to Halifax. I offered to help my daughter move into a new house with her roommates. I didn’t offer to help because I am particularly obliging or helpful or sometimes even nice, but I cannot resist spending time in Halifax. Damn that city and its delightful urban charm on the world’s second largest natural harbour.
ON TOP OF THE HILLWhen a luxury hotel provides refuge
30 AUG 2011: The severity of hurricane Irene wasn’t what was expected but it was raining money in some hotel chains due to a twisted business decision that determined that people seeking shelter from a natural disaster provided ideal market conditions for profit.
