Chris Ryall is an industry insider with strong, outspoken opinions that readers enjoy, whether they agree, or take issue, with his viewpoint.

Chris actually writes two columns, The Ryall Report, a general ‘whatever’s on his mind’ column which is often filed from exotic travel locations, and The Spa Scene, about (surprise) spas - which is an absolute must for any spa enthusiast or anyone with spa loving clients.

His column The Ryall Report runs on alternate Tuesdays and The Spa Scene runs monthly

TRADE SHOWS

Are they a Travel Industry relic

05 FEB 2013: Trade shows evoke a love-hate relationship amongst exhibitors and show attendees.  For almost 25 years I have attended hundreds of trade shows, large and small, both in Canada and around the world as an exhibitor, consumer and journalist.  After recently attending a consumer travel show in Toronto it made me reflect on the state of trade shows and their relevance.    Read more...

THE HAZELTON HOTEL

An Urban Oasis

25 JAN 2013: Back in sixties the Yorkville area in downtown Toronto was renowned for its hippie culture with melodic sounds of folk artists Gordon Lightfoot and Joni Mitchell emanating from the coffee shops along with willowy smoke trails of marijuana.    Today Yorkville is filled with upscale designer boutiques, cafes and restaurants where platinum credit cards rule.   It has also been the home of The Hazelton Hotel and its accompanying spa the past five years.   Read more...

MEXICO IN 2013

Keeping Canadians Coming

22 JAN 2013: The world didn't end December 21, 2012 as the media and whacko end of the world types hyped - attributing it mistakenly to the Mayan calendar.  Since the world didn't end it means Rodrigo Esponda, director-Canada for the Mexican Tourism Board, needs to keep working hard to insure Canadians keep visiting Mexico in record numbers. TRAVEL INDUSTRY 2013

Losers and Winners

08 JAN 2013: We made it through 2012 without the world coming to an end.  My sources say there are no plans to end the world in 2013 so that’s a relief.  In 2012, we reached one billion in international tourists for the first time in history.   So who will be the winners and losers going forward in 2013 and what may this year hold for the travel industry.  Will it be sunny or stormy skies? SWISS BLISS

St. Moritz Ski & Spa

28 DEC 2012: St. Moritz, the Swiss ski town that royals and celebrities frequent, isn’t just for the winter sports seeker.   What better way after a day on the slopes then soothing those aching muscles with some therapeutic and simply divine spa treatments.  Sure St. Moritz has a reputation for the glamour and glitz but you don’t have to be rich and famous to enjoy the spas of St. Moritz no matter what time of year. AN EVENTFUL YEAR

Olympics, Sandy, fees and more

19 DEC 2012: Cruise ship sinks.  Devastating storms.  Royal Wedding.  Summer Olympics.  Arab Spring protests.  The year 2012 will certainly go down as an eventful one with events that horrified, uplifted, angered and inspired us.   Most news events had one thing in common – either a negative and positive effect on the travel industry.   Which events had an impact in 2012? 11 DEC 2012: Buffet lines. People stumbling around on their eighth rum punch and it’s only 3pm.  The nightly drunken limbo or Macarena singing congo line around the pool.  It’s too often the way at all-inclusive resorts with some - not all - guests.   The unlimited food and drink seems to induce for some unlimited gluttony and debauchery behaviour.    Read more...

MAKING IT RIGHT FOR TRAVELLERS

New Travel Aids Helpful

27 NOV 2012: The past couple of weeks have seen some positive developments on the Canadian travel scene.  It’s a welcome reprieve from government related agencies usual announcements about more taxes and fees or more stringent security regulations.   Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus and once in a while he pays a visit to the government and industry bureaucrats, who despite their best efforts to not be logical and kind to travellers, let things slip through occasionally. CENTRAL AMERICA. WOULD YOU GO

Readers Have Their Say

30 OCT 2012: The readers have spoken!  In my previous column published on October 16, 2012 it generated a response (both online and offline) from readers, that the editor and I received which warranted an additional column.   Some readers agreed with my views and others took me to task.  Like any columnist, response is always welcome whether you agree or disagree.  Indeed what would be dangerous is if everyone agreed with me!
