TOP 10 TRAVEL FILMS

We're not looking at best acted or fabulous story. Like a good travel book, a good film about travel makes you want to pack up and head out.  And, until you can, it keeps you dreaming.  These aren’t all “travel films” but they do make you want to be there.  There really are far too many to actually pick just 10 – but you have to start someplace, so here’s a sample in no particular order.  Send us your favourites.ManhattanA masterpiece in black and white. This is Woody Allen’s tribute to a city he clearly cherishes.IndochineSet in Vietnam beginning  in 1930 and ending  on the eve of the communist revolution in 1954, this fascinating film stars the incomparable Catherine Deneuve as a plantation owner.  Whale Rider Released in 2002, It puts New Zealand on your list of must-see films and provides some fascinating background into Maori culture. Out of AfricaMeryl Streep, Robert Redford, Kenya and a good story – what more do you need.The TouristThe film isn’t the best, despite the star power of Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, but Venice shines anyway.Eat. Pray. Love.Another good cast (Julia Roberts and Javier Bardem) , so-so film.  But as a travelogue of three countries - you want to be there.Seven Years in Tibet Some love it some hate it. But this Brad Pitt film, is based on a true story it is a wonderful depiction of Tibet. The Motorcycle DiariesThis is the story of a motorcycle journey that Che Guevara took with a friend. Visually stunning, entertaining and thought provoking, as they travel through Chile, Peru and Venezuela.Into the WildJon Krakauer’s bestseller of his travels through the US, crossing Canada, and the incredible landscape of Alaska.  Don’t miss book or film.Notting HillIt’s a fun movie with Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts but London shows rather well, especially of course Notting Hill.
