21 JUN 2012: What’s with Utahns? Mormon Tabernacle Choiring, great skiing, racing on the salt flats, these are supposed to be peaceful types. But get ‘em to the airport and they’re packing more than just The Book of Mormon. Transportation Security Administration officials say handguns were discovered this week 10 minutes apart at two Utah airports.
The first firearm was found in the carry-on bag of a passenger at Provo Municipal Airport on Wednesday morning.
Has he been living in a cave? Did he not expect to get patted up, down and sideways? Did he not expect to be scanned?
Apparently not.
The .38 calibre revolver was loaded with five rounds of ammunition. The passenger had an additional six rounds wrapped in plastic in his pocket.
Charges are pending.
The second gun was discovered 10 minutes later at Salt Lake City International Airport. Another not-so-swift male passenger headed to Las Vegas, had a loaded Browning .22 calibre firearm and a magazine loaded with 10 rounds.
The second passenger was arrested and charged with carrying a firearm in a secure checkpoint. It is the 12th gun detected at a security checkpoint in Salt Lake City this year.
