Lonely Planet names Zurich as one of the top ten cities in the world
19 NOV 2008: Wake up and smell the chocolate That funny lot at Lonely
Planet are spending too much time being lonely. Their “Best In Travel
2009" (and shouldn’t that be best in 2008) lists the 850 hottest travel
trends and destinations - and names Zurich among the top ten cities in
the world. Zurich is one of the most fun places to be on the planet,
said editor Tom Hall. “If people go there, they are probably going to
be surprised.”
The renowned guidebook sees Switzerland’s biggest city as a hip metropolitan spot with a thriving nightlife.
“The night life is on a par with Berlin and London.” Says Hall.
So, it’s not all banks, chocolate and cheese (though really, is there much more to life). Visitors from all over the world are surprised by Zurich’s combination of contrasts.
Lonely Planet says, "Zurich has two faces, old and new. The wide, placid Limmat River runs through it; elegant clock-faces and 800-year-old churches grace one side, while Zueri-West, home to some of Europe's hippest nightlife, sprawls out on the other."
Lonely Planet praised Zurich for its numerous festivals, including the annual street parade, and its shopping (though expensive) on the Bahnhofstrasse. Strolling around Lake Zurich is touted as a “timeless experience.”
The publishers are noted for providing alternative views of travel. The "Best In Travel 2009" also recommends a trip to the outdoor river-pool Letten-Badi, where the city's trendsetters meet. It’s apparently particularly popular, because “in Switzerland the lakes and rivers are so clean that you can swim with your mouth open.” That’s a quote – I didn’t make it up.
The list is not ranked and is intended to be a “snapshot offering interesting and different” places to visit that have either changed or that most people are generally unaware of.
The other top 10 cities are (alphabetically):
Beirut
Chicago
Glasgow
Lebanon
Lisbon
Mexico City
Sao Paulo
Shanghai
Warsaw
